Our focus during September has been very much around continuing to invest in our team's ability to deliver personalised care, with training sessions hosted by the Rare Dementia Support Society, during which we learned more about the rarer forms of Dementia, backed up by the team at Meaningful Care Matters delivering session 2 of our Butterfly course.

We are excited to be partnering with a new local childcare provider called Willow & Rose Nursery based in Grayshott.
Dedicated to caring for children up to 4 years old, Amanda and the team believe in supporting children to develop curiosity through the Early Years Foundation Stage Framework.
At the centre of their approach is creating opportunities to explore, question and discover nature as part of exploration educational learning. Our collaboration gives Willow and Rose access to our beautiful estate, as their very own vibrant learning space filled with the best nature has to offer, whilst in a safe environment to explore and create wonder.
The partnership will include joint activities and events both in our homes and around the grounds, including an enchanted forest adventure, birdwatching, den building, storytelling session, nature craft sessions using treasures found around the forest floor and early learning about flora and fauna.

Prior to the pandemic we shared how being part of our wider community we collaborated with a number of schools to bridge the generation gap.
Intergenerational interaction between the residents and children is a delight to see and most importantly the experience is beneficial for old and young, proving age is just a number!
Our collaboration with Willow and Rose, will in time offer residents on the estate a special opportunity to interact with the children during shared events and organically as they share our wonderful Estate enriching lives across the generations.

Two Healthcare Assistants from The Huntington & Langham Estate are the first to be enrolled in their new Nursing Associate Apprenticeship with Winchester University.
Justyna Green and Jean-Paul Rappe both currently work as Team Leaders in Huntington House and Langham Court respectively, having already obtained their NVQ Level 3 qualifications.
They will continue working in their existing roles during their two-year training while also undertaking part-time placements in other settings, from hospitals to prisons, to gain a wide variety of clinical skills.
The Huntington & Langham Estate, which celebrates its 45th anniversary this year, has a long history of supporting their staff in career progression. Charlie Hoare, Managing Director, says
‘I grew up in Huntington House and remember one of the Healthcare Assistants, who would also babysit my sister and I, leaving to train as a nurse at the Royal Surrey County Hospital and going on to become a Theatre Nurse assisting in surgeries. She was always so grateful to my mum for giving her that opportunity, and I have been in awe of the steady stream of people undertaking similar career progression ever since. I am incredibly proud of everyone on the Estate who finds the time and energy to undertake qualifications alongside the incredible work they already do’.
Two further members of the Estate’s team have recently started degree equivalent NVQ Level 5 qualifications, and many more are enrolled in Levels 2 and 3.
The Estate’s management team are always looking into different ways to support people to progress their careers.

The weather has been magnificent this month for outdoor activities including gardening with grandchildren visiting the Estate, trips to the shops, Bird World and the wonderful Petersfield lake.

We all need moments of joy in our lives and as a Homemaker at Langham Court, there is nothing more rewarding than spreading Joy amongst those who live in our Specialist Dementia Care Home.
Claire shares with our MD Charlie Hoare what makes the role of Homemaker so special, providing emotional wellbeing with no one day the same. With the team all bringing their own personal passions into their roles, Claire explains how her go to is creating moment of joy through music.
The Huntington & Langham Estate pulled out all the stops for the King’s Coronation. Bunting and face painting brought back memories for many of the Queen’s Coronation street parties from 1953, while the Coronation quiche sparked conversation about traditions both new and old.
Events such as the Coronation are perfect opportunities for people who live and work in care homes to come together as one. Creating decorations together, painting each other’s faces, and chipping in with food preparation; it is not just a good excuse for a celebration (although of course it is!) but a reminder of everyone’s ability to contribute to their community.
The Huntington and Langham Estate encourages this type of mutual interaction daily by following a 100-point checklist, which is externally audited by Meaningful Care Matters to ensure it is embedded into the care culture.
Point No. 7 in the checklist is Two-Way Giving, which promotes people living in the home to offer love, care and support to the people working in the home.
This role reversal, of sorts, might sound mundane, or even a little odd, to people independent enough to cook, craft and communicate themselves, but for people in need of care, particularly specialist dementia care, it can bring much needed meaning to their lives and a feeling of being a help rather than a hinderance, which is a fear of so many.
Not all septuagenarians can be king and serve their country, but even the most reliant care home residents can contribute more than they are often given credit for. Let the Coronation be a reminder that no-one is too old to serve, even if it is a slice of quiche!

April seems to have gone by in a flash with lots of visitors to the Estate. We have been delighted to welcome lots of visitors to Huntington House and Langham Court this month, as well as a few unusual guests waddling along the corridors!
Seeing the delight of those living in Huntington House, was a great reminder of the power of animal therapy....
